How the Roles and expectations of Women changed before and during World War II
The Impact of World War II
Before World War II, In the 1930s, Women were stay at home wives and would have to take care of the children, clean, and cook. She had to take care of the household and be at home all day while her husband went off to work. Women did not work and were not expected to and it was rare to find women in the working feild. Men were dominant over Women and Women were not seen equal to Men, the husband was the head of the household and Women were the housewives. But then in 1939 when Men were sent off to fight in World War II, it left many jobs unemployed, causing the U.S to seek employment from Women. This was the first opportunity in history for Women to have a job and get out of the house and do a Man's job. It gave Women the opportunity to show Men that they can do what they do and do just as good at their jobs or even better! It became a turning point for Women in history. For the first time in U.S. history the employment of women went up to 12 million. Women did all sorts of jobs and gained new roles. Many women worked in factories, served in the U.S Armed Forces, U.S Airforce, Army Nurses, Engineers, etc. After World War II it gained Women the right to be able to work and made it common to see a Women working. At the end of World War II up to 18 million Women worked and by 1945 nearly one out of every four married women worked outside their home.
